    Akhtar is a great-great-grandchild of Maulana Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi and great-grandchild of Jan Nisar Akhtar. He is the nephew of legendary lyricist, Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, an actress. Moreover, he has two cousins, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar, who are notable directors in the Indian film industry.
